ESSAY COMPETITION FOR CHILDREN OF GUYANESE DESCENT

Guyana Folk Festival, through its parent organization, Guyana Cultural Association, announces an essay competition for children of Guyanese descent. This competition is part of the annual celebration of the cultural heritage of the people of Guyana. Guyana Cultural Association, a not- for- profit entity is committed to the preservation, propagation and promotion of the cultural heritage of the people of Guyana.

This year the Guyana Folk Festival joins the Cooperative Republic of Guyana, South America in the acknowledgment of forty years of independence and in a retrospective of one of the significant events of Guyana, South America and the nations of the Caribbean region: Carifesta, 1972.

The Rules of the Essay Competition

The Theme
Conversations about Guyana: stories told by my family.

Eligibility
This competition is open to all children of Guyanese descent, worldwide.

Age Groups
There are three age groups:

  • 7 - 10 years
  • 11 - 13 years
  • 14 - 17 years

Essay format

  • Each entry must be in essay form. There must be an adherence to the basic rules of grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • For the first two groups, 7 -10 and 11-13, the essay must be in the contestant’s own hand. If possible, the essay may be typed.
  • For the third group, ages 14 - 17, the essay must be typed.

This essay may be e-mailed as a Word document. However, any e-mailed copy must be followed by a hard copy. In all cases no faxed copies will be accepted.

Length of Essay.

  • For the first group, 7 - 10 years old: the essay must be no less than 100 words.
  • For the second group, 11-13 years old: the essay must be no less than 250 words.
  • For the third group, 14 - 17 years old: the essay must be no less than 350 words.

A recent photograph of the contestant must accompany the entry.

Prizes
There are three prizes for each group.

Prizes include:

Computers
Educational Games
Age appropriate selections of books, recorded poems, music and songs written and/or composed by Guyanese

Winning essays will be published and available at the Guyana Folk Festival Events, 2006. Each winner must sign the attached wavier to this effect.

Deadline
All essays, in hard copy, are due on July 15, 2006. No late entries will be considered.
