CELEBRATING OUR YOUTH, PRESERVING OUR HERITAGE

Celebrating Our Youth, Preserving Our Heritage
Folk Festival Cultural Summer Camp 2003

Last year’s summer camp was indeed an exciting time for the more than thirty West Indian kids who were part of the exciting Cultural Workshop organized by the Folk Festival Committee. They were able to learn more about their culture, learn traditional folk and work songs, and to execute the intricate patterns of the Maypole. Their presentation at the Folk Festival was memorable and a nostalgic reminder to their parents and to other adults present of the exciting days of their youth when they too were part of the Maypole tradition.

For 2003, the organizers have extended the workshop to a three day camp which will include a number of cultural activities: Arts & Craft, Music, Heritage appreciation, Dance, Drama (spoken word) and Maypole plaiting.

ACTIVITIES

  • MUSIC: ...........LEARN TO PLAY THE STEELPAN

  • DANCE ...........LEARN TO PLAIT THE MAYPOLE / FOLK DANCE
