Family Fun Day Program 2006

A FULL DAY OF CULTURE, & FAMILY FUN AT THIS YEAR'S GUYANA FOLK FESTIVAL! EXCITING "YOUTH FOLK-FEST" ADDED TO FOLK FESTIVAL 2006 PROGRAM

A new dimension has been added to Folk Festival 2006 with the introduction of a "YouthFolk Festival." Starting from 11.00 a.m. until 2.00 p.m. Guyanese kids will join with others from Canada, Trinidad & Tobago, and other Caribbean islands as they showcase their talent, learn Folk Games and make Folk Toys, all while learning about and celebrating their culture.
PARENTS & ADULTS ARE ASKED TO COME OUT EARLY AND SUPPORT & CHEER ON THE YOUNG PEOPLE.

"YOUTH FOLK FEST" PROGRAM:
Some of the highlights of the youth program include:
A CARIBBEAN COSTUME PAGEANT:
Parents, join the fun and bring your child in a costume which you feel represents any aspect of life in Guyana or the Caribbean.
Enter the Costume Parade around the Grounds of Meyer Levin.
Win exciting prizes for the Most Original Costume - individual or family.

Hoola Hoop Competitions
Limbo Competition

Singing Competition
Lime & Spoon Races
3-legged race

"PRESERVING THE CULTURE" WORKSHOPS
Learn to make a Kite, GT style Singing Engine, Kantawah or Box Kite
Learn to string the frame, make a bull,
how to use Barbados paper or brown paper effectively
learn about the importance of the tail
learn to play "Jumbie Lef He Pipe" and "Saul Pass"

LEARN TO PLAY STEELPAN
One of the best Pan players will be their to teach young people to play the Steelpan.

LEARN TO PLAIT MAYPOLE
Intricate patterns - spider web or diamond, the ladder or basket, or just go with the flow.

LEARN TO DANCE MASQUERADE
Learn the intricate steps that make the Masquerade Dance so exciting:
The Pick-Up, Lady-Going to Market, Scotish Islander, Boy Robin, Doneky Parade, Tumble

OTHER ENTERTAINMENT:
The Meyer Levin School Steelband Cultural Dances Fashion Show

THE FUN CONTINUES FOR THE ADULTS UNTIL 8.00 P.M.
Folk Festival 2006 is shaping up to be the best ever.
Celebrating our Caribbean Heritage this year, the Folk Festival Program will include participation from other Caribbean islands, including Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, St. Vincent & the Grenadines and others.
